USCIS,200U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) received nearly 163,000 H-1B petitions by April 7, 2008, the last day of receipt. For those who not familiar with H1B process, April 1st was the first day of receiving applications for H1B, and USCIS had announced this time that if the H1B cap of 65.000 was reached within the first five business days i.e. April 7, all applications received will go through random selection. As it is clear from the figured, the cap was reached well within the period.
Of the total number, 31,200 were petitions for H1B Advanced Degree quota, which has a separate cap of 20,000. USCIS expects to complete its random selection process by next week, starting with H1B Advanced Degree petitions. Petitions not selected under the advanced degree category will the join the random selection process for the 65,000 H1B cap.
