Republicans ask for more H-1B Visas

A Republican committee has asked the current Democrat leadership to clear a proposed bill which proposes to raise the H1-B visa (specialty occupation) numbers, from the current 65,000 to 115,000, with provision for 20 percent annual increase.

The Republican Study Committee of the House of Representatives made their appeal on a letter to the Speaker and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer on last Friday. The letter detailed the current situation, where demand for H1Bs far exceeds the quota and how US is losing highly skilled foreign students with degrees in US institutes, only due to the low H1B quota. With Senator McCain gearing up to contest for Republicans soon, the party seem to be creating the ground work for pulling in immigrant votes.
